Post Operative Management

Patients receive antibiotics, heparin anticoagulation and appropriate analgesia. Intravenous fluids are given until oral fluids can be taken in sufficient quantity. Patients remain on bed rest for 4 days. Drains and outer dressings are removed on Day 2.The vaginal pack is removed on Day 4 and light diet is commenced. The catheter is removed on Day 6 and vaginal dilatation and douching is started on Day 7.Patients are discharged on Day 8 with instructions to dilate vaginally three times a day for a period of 15 minutes on each occasion and to gradually increase the size of the dilator. Douching should take place once a day. Hormones are recommenced at 3 weeks and patients are reviewed at 6 weeks. Patients are encouraged to contact the ward if there are any problems. Most patients are able to return to sedentary work by week 7.
